Exxaro is one of the largest and foremost black-owned, South African-based diversified resources companies, with current business interests in South Africa, Europe and United States of America.

Exxaro’s Tshikondeni mine stopped operating in late 2014 when the coal resources were exhausted. This followed three decades of mining of metallurgical coal to supply the then-Iscor (now AMSA) for its steel manufacturing requirements. Since mining activities stopped, Exxaro has embarked on mine closure and rehabilitation activities. Life for the communities of Tshikondeni will continue beyond the closure of the mine. Exxaro will continue to invest in the wellbeing and livelihood of these communities through a Post Mine Closure Investment Programme (PMCIP). It includes implementing the Social and Labour Plan (SLP) projects, continuing with mine closure and rehabilitation, as well as establishing tourism related infrastructure from the housing and office infrastructure remaining.

Lastly, Exxaro will develop a concept Micro-Grid project, using organic material to generate renewable energy.
